The pumo boasts centuries-old origins, as its baroque shapes already suggest, a symbol of wealth and of belonging to the upper classes. It is a decorative element that in the past adorned balcony railings and stair handrails.

Each family chose a particular customization for its Apulian pumo, adding heraldic elements to set its home apart from the others.

The basic idea that led to making them into decorative elements came from their resemblance to a flower or a fruit, and this very ceramic bud symbolized the purity of a sprout, the capacity for renewal, fertility, wealth, and everything that could be considered positive and prosperous.

Apulian tradition saw this element as important protection against ill fortune.
To this day it is given as a wish for good fortune, since it is considered an object capable of bringing luck.
